We are living in apocalyptic times. Yet in ancient Greek the real meaning of apocalypse was not about the end of the world; the word meant “lifting the veil.” In our times, veils are being lifted and all-powerful wizards are being revealed as simple, cowardly men hiding behind a curtain. Examples today of veils being lifted include the exposing of corporate scandals, church scandals, the banking-driven economic crisis, and the rise of populist movements—at both ends of the political spectrum—that challenge existing power structures.

In fact, veils are also being lifted about the nature of power itself. At a time when the old, fear-based, command and control, patriarchal ways of doing things are being revealed as no longer sustainable, many of us are evaluating the impact of power on every area of our lives—interpersonal relationships, sex, work, politics, religion, and so on. As new and emerging energies for change become increasingly evident, what we need are new models that embody more-integrated expressions of power.
